Twisted by the Force of Water

Skeidárarsandur, Iceland

This is what is left of a bridge that got totally demolished by a glacier burst caused by an eruption under Vatnajökull in november 1996. The estimated peak flow of the water and ice coming down from the Vatnajökull Glacier was 45 000 m3/s. Some of the ice blocks that came down with the water were large as a house. Luckily no persons were harmed.
